One of the most popular day trips from Naples is to visit the historical sites of Pompeii and Mt Vesuvius. Pompeii is about 60 miles from Naples and a 45 minute drive. The ruins are just south of Naples where the Vesuvius Volcano erupted in 79 AD, burying the city of Pompeii and Herculaneum with ash and pumice stones. The site offers a chance to explore the preserved ruins and artifacts from an ancient city that was completely wiped out and nearly forgotten within a generation.

Practical Things to Do in Pompeii

Pompeii is a large archaeological site you can explore, but there are a few distinct places that are the major attractions.

The most important of all the attractions is the site of the buildings still standing from the eruption in 79AD. Nothing is life size, but the buildings still have windows in them, and you can find the rooms where we would have seen them today.

You can also see ruins of the underground plumbing from this time period and of other major structures that used to exist in the city of Pompeii.
