Fira

Fira is the capital of Santorini. It’s a quaint hill town that is home to the most beautiful view of Santorini’s caldera out of any other area.

To get to Fira, you can walk or take the cable car from Oia for 101 euros each way. It’s a fun ride, and also gives you a great view of the caldera on the way up.

There is also a funicular (gondola) from Fira to Thirasia (Tillies) for just 6 euros each way. The gondola is operated by Fira Excursions, which also provides two different bus tours of the island.

In Fira, you can purchase stamps for your passport at the Fira Stamp Office, which is housed in a lovely renovated house that is on the way down the mountain. The clerk at the office speaks English and will help you navigate using Santorini’s bus system.

The only downside to Fira is that it’s on the opposite end of the island, so you will spend a lot of time on the bus getting there.

Pros to staying at Fira:

Fira is centrally located on the island.

Close proximity to the caldera.

Wonderful view from the cable car or the funicular.

Best Places to Stay in Fira

When it comes to the best places to stay in Fira, things look as if you have it all with the greatest choice of Hotels, B&B, Apartments and Villas.

In most regards, Fira is one of the most desirable places to stay in Santorini. If you are looking for proximity to the town where you can enjoy the beautiful sunsets over the ocean, as well as great restaurants and shops, you are well situated.

If you are here for the clubs and the nightlife, Fira is also great. The Fira is situated on a hill and its higher position affords some wonderful views. Aside from the great views, the town also has all that you might want, from the finest restaurants to discotheques.

But the choice of accommodation in Fira has expanded quite a lot over the years, so the competition is fierce. This is made up of properties that range from 5-star resorts, to boutique hotels, to small guest houses. Where to start?

When you start shopping around, you will find that the cost of accommodation in Fira is higher than other places in Santorini.

Oia

Best Places to Stay in Oia

One of the most beautiful areas in Santorini is Oia. It’s resort town and is surrounded by high cliffs. A blue flag from the European Union is awarded to all beaches and marinas in the islands that have a high level of environmental conservation.

This town is famed for its pink colorful houses, which dominate the little village.

It is an expensive place to stay as the area is tourist influenced, and there isn’t much else to do in this city.

However, if you love history and architecture, then this is a great town to stay in because it is the only one in Greece.

Most of the major national monuments are in this town, and it is considered to be the best preserved place in Greece.

The hotels in Oia are exclusive and have their own architecture. They are the only place to stay if you want to experience the way a typical town used to look like. For some of the best accommodations in Oia, the Verus is one of the most recommended hotels for business travelers and it specializes in decorated suites.

There are three pools here and some relaxing areas on the cliff.

Another popular hotel that you can also stay in Oia is the Lagia Palace. It is a complete package for the best service and the most comfortable stays.

Imerovigli

Imerovigli is one of the most central zones of Santorini and regarded as the most picturesque and most authentic part of the island. Whatever your preferred view, beauty and nearness to civilization is in abundance in Imerovigli.

It is also where the best stores and restaurants are located and home to a couple of hotels …one of which is the incredible Geraki Hotel and Spa. With 360 degrees of views, ocean views at all times … and some of the best views of sunset, you’ll be hard pressed to find greater scenic bliss in the world.

Another great reason to stay here is the hotel’s own swimming pool and a very convenient location that’s also close to the black sand beach in Fira. If you are looking to enjoy both Fira and Imerovigli, this is the perfect location for you.

The hotel’s rooms are larger than usual; they are typically listed as Suites and one of those can comfortably sleep three couples. Translated from the Greek, Geraki Hotel means Silent Place, and Imerovigli, the Silent Point, is named after it.

Best Places to Stay in Imerovigli

Imerovigli is the quieter and more residential Ajiona, as it has fewer shops, restaurants and tourist activities. In fact, it was once a requirement to reside in Imerovigli to operate a hotel or a tavern there.

This is a quieter, more isolated, Imerovigli, but it’s still just a short walk down to the Akrotiri area.

The best hotels in Imerovigli are found within the main Imerovigli neighborhood. If you’re looking for a hotel near the airport, you might consider the nearby Ammoudi, which lies on the Mesaria Peninsula.

The best hotels on Santorini are found on the cliffside of Imerovigli. Staying on the cliffside gives you unparalleled views of Santorini, Mount Oia, and the Aegean Sea. You’ll find that the cliffside hotels are usually in more remote areas to allow for privacy between guests.

If you are looking for a more affordable Santorini hotel that still offers excellent views and amenities, there are some good options on Santorini as well. One of the best mid-range hotels in Santorini is the Mesaria.

Kamari

The Bodega – Ancient house is located less than 15 minutes walk from the charming village of Kamari. It is perfect for couples looking for a quiet and romantic getaway, preferably with a good sunset view from balcony. The rooms are small but perfectly OK for two persons. What makes this place special are the staff and unexpected super staff, which will always try to help you. Breakfast is tasty and served on the terrace. Good value for money.

Blue Marlin – 4-star luxury hotel located on the secluded and beautiful beach of Sissi, only 20 min drive from the port of Santorini. Good for honeymoon, romantic breaks, luxury spa treatments, or a beach front getaway with your friends.

The Five Elements Luxury Hotel – 4-star luxury hotel located in Perissa, the most authentic village in Santorini. Perfect for exploring Santorini, visiting one of the best beaches, in a stylish and comfortable hotel, with great catering options and lots of good advice on everything from A to Z. Be sure to visit the restaurant with sunset views.

Perissa

Fira, or Oia: What is the difference?

If you’re planning on visiting Santorini, the first question you will have is where to stay. Nearly every traveler, then, will ask “Where should I stay?” like I did. There are three things to consider when choosing where to stay and three most popular choices.

Where to Stay in Perissa

The oldest village in Santorini, Perissa is located right on the west side of Fira and has a history going back as deep as 825 BC. It has a string of beautiful hotels now, so don’t worry about having to stay in a hostel. The downside of that is that Perissa isn’t the most diverse part of Santorini, so if you want to spend some time in Perissa to see the sites, you may have to choose between Santorini’s best resort or your best budget hotel.

My recommendation: Santorini’s best Resort

Rooms start at 400 Euros per night.

Firostefani

When it comes to where to stay in Santorini, Firostefani is definitely the best choice. Located on the southern coast of Santorini, this area is the best of both worlds if you want to experience both the seclusion of the mountains and the proximity to activities.

The picturesque village is located just a few minutes away from the Santorini port. And although the weather here is absolutely beautiful year-round, the vibrant, sandy beach (at Perissa) is the perfect spot for a swimsuit-optional party.

Named after the famous Byzantine city of Firo, the South Coast is also more commonly known as the ‘aka beach’, as it was the first to reach the caldera’s edge. And in this ‘aka beach’ area, you’re just a few minutes away from a range of activities, such as several taverns, near the water, served by the locals and the restaurant ‘A la Fermiera’, just a few meters away, that offers the best Greek dishes in an authentic ambience. However, Firostefani, which is rich in history, has recently undergone a major change … it has become the ideal place for shopping!

Where to Stay in Firostefani

Firostefani is a picturesque town on the north of Santorini. Santorini is the well-known beautiful volcano island and this town is surrounded by the mountain. Therefore, you can enjoy the view of this beautiful town from your room in an rooftop hotel or a private sea view room in a hotel.

Firostefani is a charming merchant town. You can find a medieval city wall and an impressive sixteenth-century Byzantine Cathedral. It’s the best choice for anyone who likes quietness, fishing and a taste of local culture.

You can find the most famous sweet shops in Firostefani. It’s very popular for its famous sesame seed sweets. However, it’s not only a sweets town. You can find lovely white houses and nice small shops that are a pleasing view for your eyes.

More than those, it’s also famous as the place for a party in Santorini. You can find a LOT of sea front bars and restaurants that are the best spots to enjoy the night. If you are a party person, this is the best place to perform your party life.

Pyrgos

Pyrgos is the capital of the island of Santorini and is home to the famous hot springs and the small, nondescript main town. The two main attractions here are Pyrgos and the Church of the Assumption. The town has been reconstructed after a major event, and the restoration is especially visible in the main street.

Where to Stay in Pyrgos

Pyrgos is a truly stunning place to stay. It’s a great town to explore, enjoying the great nightlife and plentiful and cheap restaurants. There are also numerous villas that offer incredible views of volcanic land formations.

There are plenty of options in Pyrgos for places to stay too, so you can pick your preferred destination that suits your needs.

The Hotel Koulourias – the Golden Roof

This historic town has a very old look to it, which is great for those that like a more authentic feel. It’s also a great place to be if you want to enjoy the picturesque landscapes along the island’s north coast.

Furnished with traditional Greek style furniture and colorful pillows, the Hotel Koulourias – The Golden Roof has an authentic feel and a warm welcome. The rooms are luxurious and comfortable to relax in.

Koulourias offers spectacular views and boasts stellar sea views from any room of the hotel. The rooms are incredibly cozy and welcoming. Comforters and special massage towels are available yourself to enjoy.

If you’re looking for a spot that offers world class service, business and facilities, this hotel is a perfect fit. The staff are exceptionally helpful.

Santorini Hotels: Neolithic villages

Where to Stay in Megalochori

If you’re looking for an idyllic location on Santorini, you might consider staying in one of the hotels and guesthouses located in Megalochori. This small village of white, red and brown is famous for its gorgeous beaches that will melt away the stress of traveling and the sights of the island that will keep you captivated the entire time.

The lovely, narrow streets of Megalochori will take you on a journey through Greece’s history while the small beaches along this tiny, but bustling village will make you want to stay for days.

The best thing about Megalochori is that it is the home of one of the most exclusive hotels on the island, the Nissi Beach Hotel. This beachfront resort will allow you to enjoy centuries-old Santorini and its shipwrecks from the privacy of your own personal pool. The hotel’s private entrance into the sand will make you think you’re getting away from the world, but you “

Akrotiri

The Old Town of Santorini

Akrotiri is a great place to stay in Santorini, being the best town on the island. It is most famous for being where the town of Santorini actually started with the discovery of Atlantis, which is the Roman name for what Akrotiri is famous for. The town was rebuilt during the Venetian Period and much of the architecture still exists today. It is picturesque as you might expect, as you will be overlooking the Aegean Sea and the caldera volcano of Santorini.

There are a few things that you should know about the town of Akrotiri before deciding whether it is right for you. First of all, the road into the town is quite narrow and steep. The road also narrows quite a bit and there are very narrow sidewalks. Visitors should be aware of this, especially if you are in a wheelchair or scooter or mobility scooter.

Where to Stay in Akrotiri

Akrotiri is now one of the best places to stay in Santorini. Santorini has developed a reputation over the past few years as a fashionable destination, and Akrotiri is at the epicenter of all that.

For those who want a mid-range place to stay that is set further from the bustle of Fira, Akrotiri is the best option. It is accessible by bus or taxi from Fira and Firostefani.

Many of the homes there are privately owned hotels, such as Bellavita, which offers a very rustic option for around 60 euros a night. It lacks an elevator, but the deck from which you can gaze at the sunset and watch the small fishing boats come in is one of the best in Santorini.

The downside is that this hotel isn’t wheelchair accessible, so avoid this hotel if you need it.

The best luxury hotel in Santorini is the Giorgio Palace, which is unique because it has a separate hotel in Akrotiri. The Akrotiri location has beautiful ocean views, a restaurant, and a pool, and the rooms are significantly more comfortable.

The only drawback is that you need to share your swimming pool with other hotel guests.
